Collection of Museum Folkwang

The Museum Folkwang is located in Essen, Germany and holds a major collection of nineteenth and twentieth century art.  The museum was originally founded in the town Hagen in 1902 by Karl Ernst Osthaus.  Museum Folkwang was the first public collection in Germany and exhibited works by Modernist artists such as Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Matisse.  In 1921, upon the death of the museum’s founder, the Folkwang-Museumverein purchased the Osthaus collection for the city of Essen and consolidated the collection with the Municipal Art Museum to create Museum Folkwang.
