Collection of Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie


The Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie, known as The Stadel Museum, is located in Frankfurt am Main and contains one of the most important art collections in Germany.  The museum was founded in 1816 after banker Johann Friedrich Stadel donated his fortune and his art collection to found the Stadel Art Institute as a museum and an art school.  The art collection was opened to the public in 1817.  The Stadel contains art from western European schools of painting from the Middle Ages through present day.  The collection is rich in German, Dutch, Flemish, and Italian paintings from the sixteenth century to the eighteenth century as well as nineteenth century German painting.  Some notable artists include Botticelli, Dürer, Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Renoir, Rubens, Monet, Vermeer and Cézanne.
