Collection of Koehler Collection--Germany. At present held by the Hermitage.

The State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia is home to a number of private collections that were temporarily placed in German museums during WWII.  After 1945, many of these collections were brought to the Soviet Union by the Soviet Trophy Brigades.  Some were transferred to the State Hermitage and stored in vaults for over 50 years making them inaccessible to the general public as well as to specialists.  Various collections were returned to the original countries while others remain at the Hermitage.  Some of these works include the collection of Bernhard Koehler and the watercolor Boats on the Beach of Saintes-Maries by Van Gogh
