Collection of The Detroit Institute of Arts


Founded in 1885, the Detroit Institute of Arts was originally located on Jefferson Avenue but due to expansion was moved to its current location on Woodward Avenue, in Midtown Detroit, Michigan’s Cultural Center Historic District in 1927.  The Museum includes over 100 galleries with over 65,000 works and is among the top six collections in the United States featuring pieces from prehistory through the twenty first century.  The diverse collection, valued at over $1 billion, includes American, European, Modern and Contemporary, and Graphic Art as well as works of Africa, Asian, Native American, Oceanic, Islamic, and Ancient art.  Notable works include pieces by Diego Rivera and Vincent Van Gogh
