Collection of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Justin K. Thannhauser Collection

Justin K. Thannhauser was an important figure in the development and distribution of modern art in Europe.  He was the son of renowned art dealer Heinrich Thannhauser who founded the Galerie Moderne in Munich in 1909.  Thannhauser worked with his father from an early age to build exhibitions of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works along with the art of contemporary French and German avante-gardes.  Thannhauser’s commitment to promoting artistic progress corresponded with that of Solomon R. Guggenheim.  Because of this shared desire, Thannhauser donated a large portion of his collection to the Guggenheim Museum, including pieces by Cezanne, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Picasso, Pissarro, Renoir, and Van Gogh
