Collection of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon


The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts includes nineteenth and twentiethp> century paintings by some of the most well-known artists of the time.  The collection includes pieces of Romantic, Realist, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, as well as a rare group of nine original wax sculptures by Edgar Degas.  Paul Mellon left additional French and British works to the museum following his death in 1999, these included five paintings by Stubbs and drawings by artists ranging from Degas to Cezanne.  Highlights of the collection include pieces by Gustave Caillebotte, Edgar Degas, Théodore Géricault, Vincent Van Gogh, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Rousseau, and Pablo Picasso.
