Collection of Wadsworth Atheneum


The Wadsworth Atheneum, located in Hartford, Connecticut, is the oldest public art museum in the United States.  Founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth, the museum’s permanent collection consists of over 45,000 pieces with important holdings of French and American Impressionist paintings, Hudson River School landscapes, modernist masterpieces and contemporary works as well as priceless Meissen and Sevres porcelain, English silver and American furniture and decorative arts.  The collection includes notable works by European masters such as Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, and Vincent van Gogh
